A simple IEM ear tip 'Hack'
Step-by-Step Guide to Hacking a Triple Flange IEM Eartip for better fit
If you sometimes struggle to get a decent seal from your eartips with certain IEMs, this little hack might be suitable for you.
With some IEM’s I stuggled to get good bass but having loved the bass response I got with my Etymotics ER2XR and its “deep” insertion depth I thought I could be able to do something similar with a triple flange eartip for most IEM’s. This is therefore a little guide to ‘hacking’ a triple flange to allow deeper insertion depths (like a ER2XR) while making sure the internal stem of the ear tip is not crushed by re-inforcing it.
Here is the final result - while not obvious the middle part of the eartip has been re-inforced and
now keeps a good bass response with most “awkward” fitting IEMs:
Tools and Materials:
• A pair of triple flange eartips that fit your IEMs. • An old eartip or IEM stem that you’re willing to cut up. • Scissors or a precision knife. • Patience and a steady hand.
Process
Step 1: Choose Your Triple Flange Eartip
- Select a pair of triple flange eartips that are compatible with your IEMs. Ensure the size fits your ears comfortably.
- If you’re unsure, test the eartips before modifying them to see if they work for you.
Step 2: Prepare for Reinforcement
- To improve the seal and stability of the eartip, you’ll reinforce the middle section of the triple flange.
- Take note of the middle “flange” section—it’s where you’ll be adding reinforcement to enhance the seal.
I typically re-inforce the middle section of the triple flange:
Step 3: Find a Suitable Stem for Reinforcement
- Locate an old eartip or IEM stem that is firm and sturdy (e.g., a silicone or plastic eartip you no longer need).
- Ensure the stem’s size is compatible with the middle flange of your triple flange eartip.
I have a few of these eartips that I do not use but have a good solid and “wide” stem suitable for this hack:
You can see the wide stem here:
Step 4: Cut the Stem
- Using scissors or a precision knife, cleanly cut the stem from the old eartip.
- If the stem is too long, cut it into two halves—you’ll use one half for each eartip.
- Don’t worry if the cut isn’t perfectly clean; it won’t affect performance
Step 5: Attach the Reinforcement
- Take the first triple flange eartip and start with the top flange. Stretch the flange and pull it through the reinforcement ring you just cut. • This may take a bit of effort, but triple flange eartips are strong and unlikely to tear.
- Once the top flange is through, pull the middle flange through the reinforcement ring. This step strengthens the eartip and helps create a better seal.
Step 6: Repeat for the Other Eartip
- Perform the same steps for the second triple flange eartip.
- Ensure both eartips are reinforced evenly for a consistent sound experience.
Here are both sides done with the middle section re-inforced.
Step 7: Test Your Modified Eartips
- Attach the reinforced triple flange eartips to your IEMs and test the fit in your ears.
- You should notice an improved seal, better bass response, and possibly some changes in treble frequency. • Depending on your IEMs, the modification might also enhance treble response for darker IEMs.
Notes: • Seal and Bass: A good seal is essential for both active noise cancellation (ANC) and bass response. These modifications should significantly improve both. • Treble Response: Modifications might alter the treble frequency. For darker IEMs (e.g., AFUL Explorer), you might find the treble more balanced or filled out. • Comfort and Fit: While this mod improves sound quality, ensure the modified eartips remain comfortable for extended listening.
Final Result
Your reinforced triple flange eartips are now complete!
This tweak can dramatically improve the performance of your IEMs by creating a better seal and enhancing bass response while maintaining durability.
Enjoy your improved listening experience!
