Having used the Clip for the best part of 3 weeks now, I have many thoughts and I specifically in this review I have included some ‘interesting’ measurements this review. Overall, I feel Earfun has done an excellent job with the audio you get from the clip. While they do not currently offer parametric EQ (PEQ) that can be applied to the Moondrop Pill, the basic sound profile even before ‘personalisation’ dynamically adjust to give you some very decent bass (for an open design) without distortion.

But before I get into the audio nerdy details, lets start with the unboxing:

Fit and Comfort

The Earfun Clip’s primary selling point is its ultra-lightweight design optimized for all-day wear. Unlike traditional in-ear earbuds that can cause fatigue over time, the Clip’s open-ear design rests comfortably on the outer ear without creating a seal in the ear canal.

The flexible ear hooks are designed to accommodate different ear shapes and sizes, providing a secure fit that remains stable during movement. This makes the Clip suitable not only for everyday listening but also for light exercise and activities where awareness of your surroundings is important.

Since the Earfun Clip doesn’t seal the ear canal, it naturally allows ambient sound to pass through, making it an excellent choice for urban commuters, runners, or anyone who needs to maintain some “environmental awareness” while enjoying their music. The IP55 rating ensures durability against water and sweat, adding to its versatility for active use.

One advantage of any open-ear design is the reduction of the “plugged” feeling that many users find uncomfortable with traditional earbuds. This makes the Earfun Clip suitable for extended listening sessions without the ear fatigue commonly associated with in-ear designs.

Features and Performance

Advanced Connectivity

The Earfun Clip features Bluetooth 6.0, the latest Bluetooth standard that offers faster, more stable connections and smoother audio experiences. This translates to lower latency, better range, and improved power efficiency compared to previous Bluetooth versions.

Google Fast Pair support enables instant Bluetooth connections with compatible devices, streamlining the pairing process. Additionally, the Clip supports seamless dual-device connectivity, allowing you to switch between your phone and laptop without manual reconnection.

For gaming and video content, the Earfun Clip offers an ultra-low latency mode with less than 50ms delay, ensuring audio remains perfectly synchronized with on-screen action.

Premium Audio Technology

At the heart of the Earfun Clip are 10.8mm carbon fiber composite dynamic drivers designed to deliver rich, natural sound. The earbuds are Hi-Res Audio certified and support LDAC, Sony’s high-resolution audio codec that allows for significantly higher bitrates than standard Bluetooth audio.

The Clip also features 3D surround sound technology that creates a more immersive listening experience, expanding the perceived soundstage beyond what’s typically possible with earbuds. This is particularly beneficial for open-ear designs, which naturally tend to have a more spacious sound presentation than sealed in-ear models.

Call Quality and Voice Assistant

The Earfun Clip incorporates an AI algorithm working with two microphones to deliver crystal-clear calls even in challenging environments. The microphone system effectively isolates your voice from background noise, making the Clip suitable for taking calls on the go.

Voice assistant compatibility ensures you can access Siri, Google Assistant, or other digital assistants with a simple tap, adding convenience to the overall user experience.

Battery Life and Charging

Battery performance is a standout feature of the Earfun Clip. The earbuds offer up to 10 hours of continuous playback on a single charge when using standard codecs, with the charging case providing an additional 30 hours for a total of 40 hours of use before needing to connect to a power source.

When using the high-resolution LDAC codec, battery life is reduced to approximately 5.5 hours per charge, with a total of 22 hours including the case—still impressive figures for LDAC-capable earbuds.

The charging case supports USB-C fast charging, with the earbuds requiring approximately 1 hour to fully charge and the case taking about 2 hours.

EarFun Audio App

The Earfun Clip is compatible with the EarFun Audio App, which allows users to customize their listening experience through adjustable EQ profiles, control settings, and firmware updates.

Sound Impressions

The Earfun Clip delivers impressive sound quality for an open-ear design, with a well-balanced signature that works across various music genres.

Bass

Given the physical limitations of open-ear designs, which lack the seal necessary for powerful bass reproduction, the Earfun Clip performs admirably in the low frequencies. The 10.8mm carbon fiber composite drivers provide a surprising amount of bass presence without overwhelming the rest of the frequency range.

The bass is tight and controlled, with good extension for an open-ear design. While it can’t match the sub-bass impact of sealed in-ear monitors, it offers a satisfying low-end that adds warmth and body to music without becoming muddy or boomy.

Reference track: “Bad Guy” by Billie Eilish – The bass line is reproduced with good definition and weight, though naturally with less physical impact than sealed earbuds would provide.

Midrange

The midrange is where the Earfun Clip truly shines. Vocals are presented with excellent clarity and natural timbre, positioned properly in the mix without being recessed or overly forward. The open-ear design contributes to a sense of spaciousness that benefits vocal performances and acoustic instruments.

Instrument separation in the midrange is impressive, allowing complex arrangements to remain clear and distinct. The carbon fiber composite drivers deliver good detail retrieval, capturing the nuances in vocal performances and the texture of instruments.

Reference track: “Landslide” by Fleetwood Mac – Stevie Nicks’ vocals are rendered with natural warmth and clarity, while the acoustic guitar maintains proper presence and detail.

Treble

The treble response is well-extended and detailed without becoming harsh or fatiguing. The Hi-Res Audio certification is evident in the Clip’s ability to reproduce high frequencies with good extension and air, providing sparkle to cymbals and detail to string instruments.

The open-ear design naturally helps prevent the treble from becoming too intense or piercing, as some of the energy dissipates rather than being directed straight into the ear canal. This results in a pleasant, fatigue-free listening experience even during extended sessions.

Reference track: “Take Five” by Dave Brubeck – The cymbal work is reproduced with natural shimmer and decay, maintaining detail without becoming harsh.

Soundstage & Imaging

One of the inherent advantages of open-ear designs is their ability to create a more natural soundstage, and the Earfun Clip capitalizes on this with its 3D surround sound technology. The soundstage is impressively wide for earbuds, with good height and decent depth that creates an immersive listening experience.

Imaging is precise, allowing for accurate placement of instruments within the soundstage. The sense of space is enhanced by the open design, which allows some ambient sound to blend with your music, creating a more natural listening environment compared to the isolated experience of sealed earbuds.

Reference track: “Hotel California” (Live) by Eagles – The live atmosphere is well-captured, with instruments properly positioned across the soundstage and audience sounds creating a convincing sense of space.

Comparisons

Here are some comparisons with some other ‘open’ earphones that I have reviewed in the past few months.

Comparing boxes, you can see the Clip has a size just slightly larger than my “Apple Airpods with ANC” but much more pocketable than the Moondrop Pill:

Comparison of Packaging

Opening each case: Comparison with Other Open-Ear Earphones

Earfun Clip vs. Moondrop Pill

Compared to the Moondrop Pill, another popular open-ear earbud, the Earfun Clip offers several advantages including Bluetooth 6.0 (versus Bluetooth 5.3 on the Pill), LDAC support for high-resolution audio, and significantly better battery life. The Clip also features a more comprehensive app with EQ customization options.

Sound-wise, the Moondrop Pill tends to have a slightly more analytical presentation with greater emphasis on detail retrieval, while the Earfun Clip offers a more balanced, musical signature with better bass response. The Clip’s 3D surround sound technology also provides a more immersive soundstage compared to the Pill.

In terms of comfort, both are excellent for extended wear, though the Earfun Clip’s slightly lighter weight may give it an edge for all-day use.

Earfun Clip vs. Roseselsa Openfree

The Roseselsa Openfree, unlike the Earfun Clip, doesn’t offer app support or EQ customization, putting it at a disadvantage for users who like to fine-tune their sound. The Clip also boasts superior battery life, Bluetooth 6.0, and LDAC support, making it the more feature-rich option.

Where the Openfree excels is in its minimalist design and slightly lower price point. Sound-wise, the Openfree offers a warmer signature with more mid-bass emphasis, while the Earfun Clip provides better treble extension and a more balanced overall presentation.

Both offer excellent comfort for extended wear, though the Clip’s IP55 rating makes it more suitable for active use compared to the Openfree.

Frequency Respose

Dynamic Frequency Response

One of the most impressive aspects of the Earfun Clip is how the engineers have applied acoustic science to overcome the inherent limitations of open-ear designs. The frequency response measurements reveal a carefully tuned sound signature that adapts to different listening volumes.

The Earfun Clip implements a dynamic frequency response system that adjusts based on the volume level:

Earfun Clip Dynamic Frequency Response

This graph demonstrates how the Clip’s frequency response changes at different volume levels. At lower volumes ( represented by the lower lines on the graph), the bass and treble are boosted relative to the midrange, while at higher volumes (upper lines), the response becomes more linear.

Equal Loudness Curves Implementation

This dynamic adjustment is based on the principle of equal loudness contours (also known as Fletcher-Munson curves), which describe how human hearing sensitivity varies with frequency and volume especially in the bass region:

Equal Loudness Curves

Human hearing is less sensitive to bass and treble frequencies at lower volumes. By implementing this psychoacoustic principle, Earfun has created earbuds that maintain a consistent perceived tonal balance regardless of listening volume.

The practical benefit is significant: at lower volumes (like when you’re in a quiet office), you’ll still hear a full, balanced sound with satisfying bass and detailed treble. At higher volumes (such as when exercising outdoors), the sound remains balanced without becoming overly bass-heavy or harsh in the treble.

This implementation is particularly valuable for open-ear designs, which typically struggle with bass reproduction. By dynamically adjusting the frequency response, the Earfun Clip delivers excellent sound at all volumes while also minimizing distortion that would naturally occur if the same EQ were applied regardless of volume level.

Rating Explanation

I’ve given the Earfun Clip a 5-star Pragmatic Rating. Here’s the breakdown:

  • Sound Quality: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ (Excellent for an open-ear design, with balanced presentation and good detail)
  • Build Quality: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ (Lightweight yet durable construction with premium materials)

Conclusion

The Earfun Clip successfully addresses many of the traditional limitations of open-ear earbuds while capitalizing on the inherent advantages of the form factor. By combining premium features like Bluetooth 6.0, LDAC support, and customizable EQ with an ultra-lightweight, comfortable design, Earfun has created a compelling option in the increasingly crowded open-ear market.

What particularly impresses about the Clip is how it balances technological advancement with practical usability. The 10-hour battery life, IP55 water resistance, and secure fit make it suitable for active lifestyles, while the Hi-Res certification and 3D surround sound technology ensure it doesn’t compromise on audio quality.

For users who prioritize comfort and environmental awareness without sacrificing features or sound quality, the Earfun Clip represents an excellent value proposition. While it can’t overcome all the inherent acoustic limitations of open-ear designs—particularly in bass reproduction and isolation—it makes smart compromises that result in a well-rounded product that excels in its category.

Whether you’re a commuter who needs to stay aware of your surroundings, an office worker who wants comfortable all-day listening, or simply someone who finds traditional earbuds uncomfortable, the Earfun Clip deserves serious consideration as your next audio companion.
